Roanoke County Speeding & Reckless Driving Lawyer
Established in 1838, Roanoke County is part of the Roanoke Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is the largest in Southwest Virginia (with a population of more than 300,000). Two of the largest cities in the county include Roanoke (which was incorporated in 1884), and the county seat of Salem (incorporated in 1968, although the history of Salem goes back hundreds of years).
I-81 cuts through the middle of Roanoke County, running from the northeast side to the southwest side. The city of Roanoke is surrounded by a number of highways, including I-581, and highways 460, 220, 11, and 115, which collectively pass through or around the greater Roanoke area. These highways (and particularly 1-81) are often speed traps for unsuspecting drivers who may be issued tickets for both speeding and reckless driving.
At What Point Are Speeding Tickets Reckless Driving Tickets?
We often think of reckless driving as engaging in certain types of behavior, such as dangerous lane changes at high speeds, tailgating, or even drag racing. However, in Virginia, if you are charged with driving 86 miles per hour or more, your ticket will be for reckless driving, even if you were driving in an otherwise safe manner.
Reckless driving is a criminal misdemeanor offense in Virginia, with penalties that can include significant fines, revocation of a driver’s license for 6 months, 6 points added to the driver’s record, and even the possibility of incarceration.
For these reasons, we highly encourage drivers to contest tickets, as they may have a significantly better outcome than if they plead guilty (which not only could lead to one or more of the punishments noted above, but also to higher insurance premiums and being closer to the loss of a license if future traffic violations are incurred).

Our attorneys have decades of legal practice experience, and regularly represent clients facing speeding, reckless driving, and other traffic tickets. We are experienced in developing effective strategies to best represent clients, as we seek significantly better outcomes than guilty pleas.
We routinely appear on behalf of clients in a number of counties in southwest Virginia, and typically appear many times against the same prosecutors and before the same judges. As such, we know how to position the cases of clients, and we know how prosecutors and judges typically act in connection with a given set of facts. Often, we are able to arrange a plea bargain with prosecutors (subject to the approval of the court) with a much better result than a guilty plea. We will also go to trial if a client wishes to contest guilt.
